Building Structures

Project 1: Fettucine Truss Bridge

The objectives of this project are as follows

- To develop student’s understanding of tension and compressive strength of construction materials

- To develop student’s understanding of force distribution in a truss

- To design a perfect truss bridge which fulfils the following criterias:

o High level of aesthetic value

o Minimal construction material

This project was definitely interesting as it exposed me to the rich historical architecture that can be found in my own home city. It honed my analytical and fact-finding skills as we had to collect information on site through observation, but also through research at national archives, libraries and carefully chosen Internet sources. Also, as we were prohibited from taking pictures at the site, we had to sketch what we saw and this was a good experience.

Project 2: Extension of an RC Bungalow

The project is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic

structural proposal. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of

building structure

The objectives of this project are as follows:

 To introduce the basic process of building structures design process to the students.

 To enable the students to have a holistic experience including Concept and Structure Layout

Design, Building Structure Engineering Considerations, Structure Members Sizing and

Calculations, Final Report and Presentation.

I really enjoyed analyzing the information we had previously gathered and was able to find a crucial link as to why each of the 5 users that had used the building thought that the building was the most suitable for their functional requirements and usage.
